January will be upon us before you know it and we all know what that means, time to make that resolution that most of us never stick to. Well let’s make this year different, let’s give 100% to sticking to our resolutions and making positive changes in our lives.
For those of you who make the promise of getting in shape, then this post is geared toward you. We’ve all heard the phrase “Dress for Success” well when we start any workout regimen, we need to dress the part. Finding the right workout attire and the right fit will be beneficial to your success.
No one wants to be in the middle of a workout and have to adjust your clothing every five minutes. I’ve been there and trust me, it can be a pain in the rear. To remedy this problem, I only buy athletic pants or shorts that have a draw string to tighten them. Tighten them just enough where you can feel they won’t fall down but not too tight were they feel uncomfortable.
If you’re a runner or participate in any type of training that makes you sweat profusely, then buying moisture- wicking tops and bottoms will make it a more comfortable workout, and of course make sure they are the right fit. Runners also need to wear proper footwear. You can cause so much damage to your ankles and feet without it. I wrote a post about footwear safety you can read here.
Some running experts suggest that a good pair of running socks are as important as a good pair of running shoes.
I’m not a runner so I can’t agree or disagree with that statement. I’ve played plenty of sports that require a lot of running and never had an issue wearing plain socks, so if you’re a runner than maybe you can verify or dispute this assessment.
If you’re doing any type of weight training, whether it be free weights or weight stations that use the pulley system, I would wear clothing that are not too tight and not too lose, you want a snug fit. You don’t want your clothing snagging on equipment that weighs hundreds of pounds and you don’t want it too tight as to split your pants while doing squats lol. I laugh cause it happened to me.
If you’re a Cyclist then wearing a form-fitting pair of pants will be safest as to not get caught up in the chain or any other moving parts. If it’s warm in your neck of the country than shorts will do fine.
When training at a martial arts dojo, most disciplines require the student to wear uniforms or gi, Muay Thai practitioners usually wear a tee-shirt and lose fitting shorts. But if you’re not at the dojo and want to go to the gym to practice your punching and kicking then loose- fitting clothing will be your best bet. Especially your pants, you don’t want to practice your high kicks while wearing tight pants.
Yoga requires a lot of stretching and bending. A good form-fitting outfit will do just fine. There are yoga specific shorts and leggings you can purchase at very inexpensive prices. You can check some of them out here.
Whatever athletic attire you decide to wear, making sure it’s the right fit will boost your confidence.
Whatever your fitness goals are, start out with whichever brand or style you are most comfortable with. Try out different brands if you must until you find what makes you happy. If you’re not happy with the clothing you’ll be wearing to the gym than it’s unlikely you’ll even make it to the gym.
It’s so convenient to buy your athletic wear online, the downside to this is that you can’t try the clothing on before you purchase them. I suggest using the fit chart after taking your measurements. Always read customer reviews and feedback so you have an idea of which brands are true-to-size.
If you’re undecided on what colors to wear, black is always in style and matches everything, black also makes you look slimmer. Just an option if you’re undecided on what colors to wear.
Set your goals. It’s a proven fact that people who write their goals down are more likely to accomplish them then those who don’t write them down.
It doesn’t matter how many workout outfits you buy if you never wear them. Writing your goals down will give you an advantage over others who don’t. You can read a very interesting study written about a Harvard study on goal setting here. Must Read!
Before you start any workout regimen, write down your goals, be specific when writing. Don’t just say I want to lose 20 pounds. Write a specific date, what will it take? How many days a week will you go to the gym? How many calories will you need to consume a day?
If you’re building muscle. How much protein do I need to consume each day? How often should I lift without damaging my muscles? Write it all down and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day.
If you’re not clear on goal setting than please read the study Harvard conducted, it will teach you everything you need to know about goal setting.
Focus, Focus, Focus!
Now that you’ve chosen your workout attire, you’ve written down your specific goals. Now it’s time to get it done. Get to that gym and never let anything distract you from your objective. Believe me when I say that you won’t be the only new person in the gym. Focus on yourself, get that workout in and you’ll feel amazing afterwards, that feeling will become addictive, you’ll want it all the time!
Workout from home
Not everyone has the money, time or transportation to get to a gym. I worked 15 hours a day and trust me, the last thing I wanted to do was to go to a gym, So I would workout, from home. You can get a great workout from home using your own body weight, Push ups, sit ups, squats, dips, shadow boxing, stretching, any activity is better than none.
I don’t want to hear any excuses as to why you can’t workout, grab your fitness attire, write your goals down, and focus on your objective. You can do it, I have faith in everyone who truly wants to make a positive change in their lives. If I can help in any way please feel free to contact me.
One more thing I’d like to say is if you do order your clothing online, make sure you try them on as soon as you receive them, just in case they don’t fit or they sent you the wrong product. That way you can send them back for a refund or exchange, some vendors give you 30 days but some only give you 7 so don’t waste time and put your package aside for latter. Check it as soon as you get it. Remember you want the right fit. Workout and look good while you’re doing it!
Until Next Time!
